The Klaipėda City Municipality, in association with Klaipėda – European Youth Capital and other partners, is inviting young people to take part in UNLOCK SDGs HACKATHON, the international virtual ideas competition scheduled to take place on May 20-21. The main challenge of the event is to create a presentation of the sustainable development goals.

THE YOUTH FOCUSING ON ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, AND SOCIAL WELLBEING

The growing population, the dwindling natural resources, the spreading environmental pollution, other environmental, economic, and social issues are becoming a major reason for concern about the future of the plant. In the words of Greta Meškauskienė, the head of the Klaipėda – European Youth Capital 2021 project, it was back in the phase of drawing the tender application already that Klaipėda’s youth voiced, loudly and clearly, today’s most pressing issues, some of them reflecting the goals of sustainable development:  ‘The virtual competition is set to raise the awareness of the goals of sustainable development to catch the city authorities’ attention and to encourage the city’s community to act towards positive, global change. I believe that we can only achieve progress in our daily lives once we have realised the existing issues and the potential implications of our actions as we look for the right solutions and employ young people’s ideas to that end. After all, future generations will bear witness to a shifting world,’ stresses Mrs Meškauskienė.

CREATING ORIGINAL PRESENTATIONS OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS AS THE COMPETITION’S CHALLENGE

The participants in the two-day hackathon will be tasked to design an original presentation of 1 of the 17 sustainable development goals (SDG) and propose solutions of how that goal can be achieved. The goal and the action plan can be presented as a website, a special app, song, dance, social action, photo collages, videos, and other innovative solutions. The important thing is that it has to be impactful, memorable, and feasible.

The most creative and innovative ideas will earn their authors a number of prizes: the first-place winners will receive EUR 1,000 in cash from SBA Home group, the runners-up, tickets to Lithuania on DFDS ferries with a value of EUR 500, and third-place winners, a Light House workation package: an overnight stay at a sleep capsule and a chance to try out a cutting-edge work space.

CITY BUSINESSES CONTRIBUTING TO THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPENT VISION

Justas Baltrušis – Baltrušaitis, head of Business Development at SBA Home, says: ‘The concept of sustainability goes beyond the green energy or solar panels that we use. It is a whole of many actions that are hard to measure, such as fostering equal opportunities, community projects, social initiatives, environmental protection, and so on.’ Here is one case in point: in an effort to make a contribution to saving the diminishing population of the world’s bees, the firstfamilies of bees were settled on the roof of Klaipėdos Baldai and at all SBA Group companies and business centres in 2019; the bees are thriving and made 100 kg of honey in 2020 for the entire workforce of SBA Group to enjoy.

Organisers of the event: Klaipėda City Municipality, Klaipėda – European Youth Capital 2021. Partners: The association of Klaipėda youth organisations Apskritasis Stalas, the Nordic Council of Ministers Office in Lithuania, Light House, and others.
